Festival History
The following is an excerpt from the 100th Centennial Anniversary article about the history of our festival. It was written by J. Thomas Blankley in 2004.
Fun, games and expertly prepared Italian cuisine became hallmarks of Holy Rosary’s summer festival. Mr. Francesco Lupi was festival chairman for 1937 and 1938.A ravioli supper was provided for the public at a cost of 50¢ per person; two bicycles were raffled off and a profit of $844 was realized for the benefit of the Parish. Although general economic conditions in 1938 were quite difficult, a refrigerator was raffled off in 1938; profits were down slightly to $837.
By 1940 net profits had risen to $1,538, this in spite of rain! Workers were more difficult to recruit in 1941, but profits that year reached $1,800. By late 1942 the annual summer festival profits had reduced the parish debt by almost $7,000. Because of World War II, the annual summer festival was held in abeyance until 1948. By the early 1950’s a large number of our parishioners voluntarily brought in food donations well in advance of mid-August, and Holy Rosary’s “Noodle Makers” became legendary in Kenosha.
